Building a Circular Economy (LDP-2)

Noonu Atoll, threatened by waste, is adopting a "circular economy" approach to waste management, inspired by nature's closed-loop system. The Sustainable Waste Management Model focuses on eight strategies: educating residents and businesses about the circular economy, advocating for supportive national policies, equipping island councils with waste management knowledge and tools, encouraging local businesses to turn waste into resources, strengthening municipal services, promoting renewable energy, proposing a mobile municipal service for efficient waste management, and supporting the development of cost-effective, locally-driven solutions. This approach requires collaboration between all 13 inhabited islands, resorts, and the local community. The goal is to establish Noonu Atoll as a model for sustainable waste management in the Maldives, promoting a circular economy and achieving zero waste. The objectives include increasing community awareness, developing supportive policies, establishing recycling businesses, improving waste systems, increasing the use of solar power and fuel-efficient technologies, implementing a mobile municipal service program, and supporting locally-driven solutions. The guiding principles are to engage, reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle.
