Addressing Drug Addiction and Reintegration

This plan outlines a collaborative approach between the Atoll Council and key stakeholders to address the complex issue of drug addiction, gang violence, and extremism. It focuses on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration, with a strong emphasis on cultural and religious sensitivities. To reduce the prevalence of drug addiction, gang violence, and extremism in Noonu Atoll by providing comprehensive, accessible, and culturally appropriate treatment and rehabilitation services, and by fostering community support and reintegration.

Strengthen Collaboration and Coordination

Foster strong partnerships between the Noonu Atoll Council, National Drug Agency, National Counter Terrorism Centre, Maldives Correctional Service, Gender Ministry, National Center for Social Security, Atoll Hospital, and healthcare service centers. Establish regular communication and coordination mechanisms. Develop a shared vision and strategic plan for addressing drug addiction and related issues.

Enhance Prevention Efforts

Develop and implement evidence-based drug prevention programs targeting youth and vulnerable populations.

Incorporate Islamic teachings and values into prevention programs to strengthen resilience. Strengthen community-based prevention initiatives through capacity building.

Improve Access to Treatment

Establish accessible and confidential drug treatment services in Noonu Atoll. Train healthcare providers in addiction treatment and management. Develop culturally appropriate treatment modalities, including medication-assisted treatment and psychosocial interventions.

Establish a Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program

Develop a rehabilitation program that addresses physical, psychological, and social needs of addicts. Integrate Islamic teachings and values into the rehabilitation curriculum. Provide vocational training and life skills development to support reintegration.

Facilitate Reintegration

Create supportive community environments for recovering addicts. Develop employment and housing opportunities for former addicts. Establish aftercare programs to prevent relapse.

Ensuring Sustainability of Drug Addiction Services

To ensure the long-term success of drug addiction services, it is crucial to secure consistent funding, enhance the capabilities of local staff through training and support, actively involve the community in prevention and support efforts, and seamlessly integrate drug services with broader health and social programs.
