Pilot Programs & Capacity Building

Atoll Harvest program is focused on building local capacity for sustainable agriculture, livestock management, mariculture and aquaculture while testing pilot programs. This phase aims to empower community members by providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and expertise to adopt and implement sustainable practices. By enhancing the skills and capabilities of the local population, the program seeks to create a foundation for long-term sustainability and resilience in food production and resource management. Additionally, pilot programs will be launched to test and demonstrate the viability of these practices on a small scale, providing valuable insights and lessons for broader implementation. These pilot initiatives will serve as practical examples of how sustainable practices can be integrated into everyday farming, livestock management and mariculture activities, showcasing their benefits and feasibility.

Chronology

1

Awareness Campaigns & Training

Conducting awareness and training workshops to educate community members on various aspects of sustainable food production exploring permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative farming as well as aquaculture and mariculture. These workshops are essential for building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that community members can apply in their own farming and livelihood activities. The sessions will be delivered through a combination of virtual and hands-on learning to ensure that participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Experts in each field will lead the workshops, providing participants with up-to-date information and best practices. Topics covered will include sustainable farming techniques such as permaculture and agroforestry, efficient resource management, value addition and climate resilience. By the end of these workshops, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of sustainable practices and be equipped with the tools needed to build their climate resiliency through livelihood activities.
2

Pilot Aquaculture & Mariculture Initiatives

Involves launching pilot aquaculture and mariculture initiatives to test and demonstrate sustainable practices in these areas. These small-scale projects will focus on environmentally friendly methods exploring localisation in terms of building climate resilience. The pilot initiatives will serve as models for larger-scale implementations, showcasing the benefits and feasibility of sustainable aquaculture and mariculture. Community members involved in these projects will receive ongoing support and training to ensure their success. The goal is to provide practical examples of how sustainable practices and climate resilience can be integrated into aquaculture and mariculture operations, highlighting their potential for sustainable livelihoods. The insights gained from these pilot projects will be shared with the broader community, nationally as well as internationally particularly with other small island developing nations.
3

Permaculture and Agroforestry Pilot Project

Involves exploring permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative farming as pilot projects. Through promoting collective ownership and responsibility, the formation of cooperatives will be explored. Interested community members will receive training on permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative farming with case-studies from across the world and experts will guide with hands-on activities to implement these concepts in island level. The insights gained from these pilot projects will be shared with the broader community, nationally as well as internationally particularly with other small island developing nations.

4

Seedbank and Nursery Setup

The purpose of the seedback is to preserve native species especially ecologically and culturally significant plants for reviving cultural heritage and contributing towards climate resilience. The aim of establishing nurseries is to provide a controlled environment and necessary care for the initial stages of plant and animal growth as well as to provide a sustainable supply of plants for restoration and regenerative activities across the atoll with potential for scaling up to supply for the needs across the Maldives.
