Infrastructure Development & Resource Allocation

Atoll Harvest program focuses on building the necessary infrastructure and allocating resources to support sustainable livelihood activities. This phase is critical for providing the physical and logistical foundation required to implement and sustain the initiatives of the program. The aim of developing appropriate infrastructure is to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of local food production systems. The infrastructure development will include the establishment of cold storage and processing units, the construction of aquaculture and mariculture facilities, setting up the facilities for seedbank and nurseries and developing the built environment needed for permaculture, agroforestry and regenerative farming initiatives. The aim is to address specific needs within the community, ensuring that all aspects of food production and resource management are adequately supported. By the end of this phase, the program aims to have robust infrastructure in place that will facilitate the successful implementation of sustainable food production and improve the overall resilience of the community’s food systems.

Chronology

1

Establish Cold Storage & Processing Units

Establishing cold storage facilities and processing units for fish, poultry, livestock, and coconut products. These facilities are essential for preserving the quality of perishable goods, reducing post-harvest losses, and adding value to raw products through processing. The cold storage units will be equipped with energy-efficient technologies to minimize operational costs and environmental impact. The processing units will enable the community to produce value-added products, such as processed fish, poultry cuts, and coconut oil, which can be sold at higher prices in local and regional markets. By providing training on the operation and maintenance of these facilities, the project aims to ensure their long-term sustainability and effective use. The establishment of cold storage and processing units will significantly enhance the community’s capacity to manage and market their produce, contributing to improved food security and economic resilience.
2

Aquaculture & Mariculture Infrastructure

Involves developing the necessary infrastructure for aquaculture and mariculture activities. This includes the construction of ponds, cages, and other essential structures for fish farming and mariculture fattening. These facilities will be designed to support sustainable practices, such as efficient water use and environmentally friendly feed. The infrastructure will provide a controlled environment for the cultivation of fish and other marine species, ensuring optimal growth conditions and high productivity. By investing in robust aquaculture and mariculture infrastructure, the project aims to enhance the community’s capacity to produce high-quality seafood, reduce reliance on wild fish stocks, and create new economic opportunities. Training will be provided to community members on the management and maintenance of these facilities, ensuring their effective use and long-term sustainability.
3

Permaculture and Agroforestry Expansion

Focuses on constructing facilities for poultry farming and livestock husbandry. These facilities will include poultry coops, livestock pens, and shelters that provide a safe and controlled environment for raising animals. The design of these facilities will prioritize resource efficiency, animal welfare, and biosecurity to prevent disease outbreaks. By providing adequate housing and care for poultry and livestock, the project aims to improve animal health, increase productivity, and enhance the overall sustainability of livestock operations. Training will be provided to cooperative members on best practices in animal husbandry, including feeding, breeding, and disease management. The construction of these facilities will enable the community to expand their poultry and livestock operations, contributing to improved food security and economic resilience.
4

Nursery Expansion

Involves scaling up nurseries for agricultural seedlings, livestock breeding, and cooperative-managed animal husbandry. These nurseries will serve as centers for the propagation of high-quality seedlings, the breeding of poultry and livestock, and the initial care of young plants and animals. The expansion of nurseries will ensure a reliable supply of healthy seedlings and livestock for community farming and livestock operations. By providing training on nursery management and maintenance, the project aims to enhance the community’s capacity to produce and manage their own planting and breeding stock. The nurseries will also serve as hubs for ongoing training and capacity building, providing community members with the skills needed to manage and maintain their own nurseries. The expansion of nurseries will support increased production and sustainability in agricultural and livestock activities.
