A public forum held at Ambaage Studio, Kudafari, brought together stakeholders to discuss the sustainable development of Noonu Atoll Land Use. Participants included His Excellency Eric Walsh, Canada High Commissioner, members of Kudafari’s elderly club, senior students from Kudafari School, staff from Noonu Atoll Administration and Kudafari Council, as well as representatives from Land Sea Maldives and other residents.

At the core of the discussions was the presentation of the Reimagine Noonu Atoll Binaaveshi Project. This initiative is designed to establish sustainable and equitable land and resource management practices across the atoll. Its focus is to balance economic development with environmental conservation. The plan prioritizes community well-being, emphasizing inclusivity and resilience in its strategies. By aligning development goals with sustainable practices, it aims to improve the quality of life for residents, create new economic opportunities, and safeguard ecological systems.

Kudafari Community Voices and Concerns

The forum provided a platform for residents to share their views and address issues affecting their livelihoods. A significant concern raised by participants was the leasing of uninhabited islands by the central government bodies. These islands, long relied upon by local communities for essential resources like coconuts and palm leaves, are central to traditional livelihoods.

Concerns extended to environmental impacts such as the cutting of important tree species, like sea almond, by leasing companies. Residents stressed the need for sustainable land use policies that protect fragile ecosystems while upholding traditional practices and community livelihoods.

Participants underlined the importance of a transparent approach to land use planning and resource allocation. The Noonu Atoll Administration reaffirm its dedication to inclusive and participatory governance, ensuring that community perspectives are central to all policies. Insights gathered during the forum will help guide the development of a framework that reflects the diverse needs of the atoll. The forum also highlighted the value of international partnerships in addressing local challenges. The participation of His Excellency Eric Walsh underscored Canada’s commitment to fostering collaboration and supporting sustainable development efforts in the region.

The discussions at Kudafari showed a unified commitment to building a resilient and sustainable future for Noonu Atoll. The Reimagine Noonu Atoll Binaaveshi represents a crucial step forward in promoting progress while ensuring the preservation of the atoll’s natural and cultural wealth for future generations. Through collaboration, inclusivity, and transparency, Noonu Atoll is working toward a future that benefits all its residents.
