Council Social Services Unit and Noonu Atoll Police met to strategize on the implementation of the 2025 Social Cohesion and Resilience Plan. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for the residents of Noonu Atoll. The meeting focused on a wide range of initiatives aimed at addressing pressing social challenges, while laying the groundwork for resilient communities.

Strengthening Crime Reduction Efforts and Policing

Acknowledging the positive trend of reduced crime rates, the agencies discussed ongoing strategies to further combat criminal activity and foster a secure environment throughout the atoll. Plans to strengthen the Atoll Police Force were emphasised, ensuring equal access to police services across all islands. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the halted construction of the Atoll Police building, with both parties identifying its completion as vital to boosting operational capacity and public trust.

To enhance rehabilitation efforts, it was proposed that the Noonu Atoll Police Commander serve as a representative on the Atoll’s rehabilitation committee. Furthermore, gaining official endorsement from the central police was recognised as a key element in advancing the fight against drug abuse and criminality.

Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness

The collaborative approach extended to emergency preparedness, where fire safety, flood response, and other disaster risks were prioritised. Initiatives to share resources like pumps and essential equipment across the atoll were discussed, along with the organisation of training programs and response drills in partnership with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDP). These steps are expected to significantly enhance the atoll's ability to respond effectively to and recover from emergencies.

Administrative and Digital Transformation Initiatives

The meeting also addressed pressing administrative challenges, including the implementation phase of the Council Register for foreign labour management and improving the oversight of counterfeit vehicle registrations.

A special focus was placed on digital transformation, with plans to modernise municipal services through the digitalisation of regulations, permits, and other public services. This shift aims to improve access, efficiency, and transparency in local governance, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable development.

Combating Drug and Cybercrimes

Recognising the evolving nature of criminal activities, efforts to combat drug smuggling and trafficking were identified as critical priorities. The establishment of a dedicated centre to monitor these illicit activities was proposed. Additionally, the need to strengthen cybercrime surveillance measures was highlighted, strengthening the security and safety of residents in the digital age.

Commitment to Progress

This productive meeting laid the foundation for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to advancing the 2025 Social Cohesion and Resilience Plan. The collaborative initiatives developed reflect the commitment of both the Council Social Services Unit and the Noonu Atoll Police to build a safer, more resilient, and inclusive community for all residents of the atoll.
