We are honoured to share details of a significant and productive visit by His Excellency David Jessup, Australia’s first resident High Commissioner to the Republic of Maldives, to Noonu Atoll, specifically the island of Manadhoo. This visit represents a meaningful step in strengthening ties between our communities and international partners, fostering collaboration on shared goals of sustainable development, good governance, and cultural preservation.

During his visit, High Commissioner Jessup engaged in constructive discussions with us and the presidents of the islands within our atoll. These conversations centred on critical themes, including decentralisation, good governance, the atoll land-use plan, and proposed amendments to rules and regulations governing atoll development. Our dialogue emphasized the importance of empowering local communities through decentralised governance structures tailored to the unique needs of our atoll. We explored strategies to refine our land-use plan, ensuring a balanced approach that promotes economic growth while preserving our natural environment and resources. Furthermore, we discussed regulatory updates to facilitate inclusive and sustainable development across the atoll, aligning with the aspirations of our people.

In addition to these discussions, High Commissioner Jessup visited Manadhoo, where he met with the Manadhoo Island Council and representatives from civil society organisations dedicated to promoting culture and community engagement. These interactions highlighted the vibrant cultural heritage of our atoll and the active role of our communities in fostering social cohesion and local development. The High Commissioner also toured public institutions and cultural sites on the island, gaining insight into the rich traditions and community-driven initiatives that define Manadhoo’s identity.

We deeply appreciate the opportunity to engage with High Commissioner Jessup and value his commitment to understanding the priorities and aspirations of our communities. These interactions reinforce our dedication to advancing governance practices that are transparent, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of our people. They also underscore the importance of international partnerships in supporting sustainable development and cultural preservation.

We express our sincere gratitude to His Excellency David Jessup for his visit and the meaningful exchanges it facilitated. We remain committed to building on these discussions, working collaboratively with both local stakeholders and international partners to create a prosperous, sustainable, and culturally vibrant future for our atoll.
