His Excellency Eric Walsh, Canada High Commissioner, met with the Manadhoo Council. In this meeting, Manadhoo Council presented their ongoing projects, future plans, and the challenges currently faced by the community. The meeting offered an opportunity to discuss key areas of concern, with a particular focus on waste management practices within the island.

Waste Management Challenges

During the meeting, the Manadhoo Council presented an overview of their projects and highlighted the critical issue of waste disposal. It was noted that, due to a lack of feasible alternatives, the council is currently disposing of waste by dumping it into the ocean. While acknowledging that this is not an ideal solution, it was emphasized that this remains the only option available until more sustainable waste management practices can be implemented.

Following the discussions, H.E. Eric Walsh toured various project sites on the island, including the Manadhoo Waste Management Centre. The engagement with the Manadhoo Council underscores the importance of addressing pressing local issues through dialogue and collaboration. By examining challenges firsthand and engaging with local stakeholders, the visit highlights the ongoing commitment to finding viable solutions that align with the community’s needs and priorities.

The discussions and site visits reflect a step toward identifying practical and sustainable alternatives for waste management, aiming to support the development and well-being of the Manadhoo community.
