His Excellency Eric Walsh, High Commissioner of Canada, met with the Maafaru Council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) during his visit to Noonu Atoll. The discussions centered on the Council and WDC’s current projects, development plans, and the challenges they face in achieving their objectives.

Addressing Challenges and Sharing Initiatives

The Maafaru Council and WDC presented their contributions to the community. These included ongoing and completed community projects, as well as plans for future initiatives aimed at improving public services and infrastructure. However, they highlighted obstacles such as persistent financial constraints and resource shortages. A key issue raised was the lack of a properly constructed council office, which hinders efficient administrative functions, along with financial challenges that limit the Council’s ability to implement projects effectively.

Sustainability also featured prominently in the conversation. The Council spoke about their efforts to transition to solar energy as part of a larger renewable energy plan, developed in collaboration with the Noonu Atoll Council. While land had been allocated for this project, the work stalled following central government intervention.

The Council further highlighted Noonu Atoll’s waste management plan. This initiative, which aims to integrate both inhabited islands and local resorts, is designed to improve waste processing and promote environmentally sound practices at the community level.

During the meeting, His Excellency Eric Walsh addressed the concerns raised and discussed potential avenues for support. He introduced the Canada Fund, which is open for proposals until February 6, 2025. Provided as a financial assistance platform for various entities, including active NGOs, the fund offers support for initiatives that address local challenges while aligning with community development goals.

His Excellency encouraged eligible parties to submit a concise two-page proposal, underlining Canada’s commitment to supporting sustainable and impactful projects in coordinating with local efforts.
